In the latest installment of our video series, West on the Road, we travel across the Atlantic to our manufacturing facility in Eschweiler, Germany. There we meet Manager of Process Engineering Martin Rothstein, who says he’s impressed at how often he has encountered West products in his private life, whether visiting a family member in the hospital or during a vaccination appointment for one of his two small children.
Rothstein and the teams at the Eschweiler facility produce high-value pharmaceutical packaging products, turning materials into high-quality elastomeric stoppers, plungers and other components for the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. With the biopharmaceutical industry experiencing a shift toward patient-centered, quality care, it is increasingly important to maintain strict manufacturing processes to decrease risk. With this in mind, Rothstein explains that for many customers, it’s important to work with a provider such as West that manufacturers all of the various packaging components for a drug product under one roof, ensuring minimal risk.
The teams at Eschweiler have a long history of providing high-quality components; they possess a deep knowledge of the production process and are able to provide the right support to the customers to help them improve patient care around the world. Check out this new video to learn more about the work being done at West’s Eschweiler facility and visit our Careers page to learn more bout working at West in Germany.
On March 26, the Delaware Valley Chapter of PDA and West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. co-sponsored a workshop: Defining a Strategy for Combination Products, at West’s headquarters in Exton, PA. More than 150 people from 45 companies that provide drug products and combination products attended. In prior PDA events, combination product regulatory challenges have been cited often as an area both of interest and confusion. This workshop aimed to address them.
Fluoropolymer-laminated elastomer stoppers and plungers provide enhanced performance for container and delivery systems for parenteral drug products – especially sensitive biologic drug products. Among the many fluoropolymers available, West uses ETFE [poly(ethylenetetrafluoroethylene)] for its FluroTec®–laminated products. Selection of ETFE was based upon ease of moldability and the following factors.
Particles in drug products can come from many sources—extrinsic (from outside the process), intrinsic (from within the process) and even inherent (as part of the drug formulation)1.
Glucose monitoring, or measuring the amount of sugar in the blood, is a vital part of everyday care for those suffering from diabetes. Traditional tests require patients to prick their fingers and place a drop of blood on a test strip. The strip is then placed in a glucose meter that reports the results to the patient. While this test is very accurate, it offers a reading for only a single point in time. For patients to get a range of their blood glucose levels, more frequent data is needed at a variety of different times.
